Brighton High School in Cottonwood Heights, Utah is located about ten miles south of Salt Lake City. The school, which opened in 1969, is designed with two octagonal sections housing self-contained classrooms and a full auditorium. A gymnasium and support areas complete the building which is situated on the brow of a hill. The teacher/pupil ratio is 1 to 27.3, but actual class sizes vary. A Parent/Teacher/Student Association attempts to address special school needs and strengthens programs through volunteer committee work.

Brighton High School is located near the foothills of the Wasatch Mountains about ten miles south of Salt Lake City. The school serves a suburban area with approximate boundaries from 6600 South to 9400 South and 2000 East to 3455 East.

The school serves about 1,800 students in grades 9 to 12 in suburban area extending across Sandy, Utah and Cottonwood Heights, and is part of the Canyons School District.

Athletics

Drill Team

Brighton High has recently gained national recognition of the Drill Team "Accadians" and Girls Volleyball, ranking 1st and 9th, respectively.

  • Grand National Champions in Drill Nationals 2004-2006
  • National Champions in "Large Kick," "Large Novelty," "Large Military," "Large Jazz" Dance/Drill Nationals 2005

Football

  • In 1982 the Bengals won the State Championship.
  • Alta High School (Utah) Bingham High School and Jordan High School (Utah) are rivals to the Bengals. Previous rivals included Hillcrest High School and Skyline High School in previous districts

Golf

  • 5 total State Championships, 1985-1992, 2012

Hockey

  • 3 total State Championship (Boys), 1978, 1987, & 2007

Soccer

  • 7 total State Championships (Boys), 1989-2000 ; 2 consecutive, 1999-2000, and 2008-2009.
  • 3 total State Championships (Girls), 1989-1997 ; 2 consecutive, 1989-1990
  • Girls 5A State Champions 2010, ranked 14th in nation
  • Girls 5A State Champions 2013, ranked 2nd in nation

Swimming

  • 19 total State Championships (Boys) 1983-2010 (highest total in state) ; 7 consecutive, 1990-1996
  • 21 total State Championships (Girls) 1982-2001 (highest total in state) ; 20 consecutive, 1982-2001 (highest total in state)

Tennis

  • 5 total State Championships (Boys) 1980-1989
  • 15 total State Championships (Girls), 1976-2002 ; 7 consecutive, 1981-1987, and 3 from 1995-1997
  • Boys received 1st in state in 2008

Volleyball

  • Ranked 9th in the nation (as of 2006)
  • 5A All-State 1st Team (without losing a single game), 2006
  • Ranked 17th in 2005 Pre-Season National High School

Wrestling

  • 14 total State Championships, 1974-1988, 2001 ; 11 consecutive, 1978-1988

Academics

Brighton High has consistently scored in top percentiles in the ACT, SAT, and state testing. In addition to a wide variety of Advanced Placement courses taught, concurrent enrollment is available through Utah State University and Salt Lake Community College, earning direct college credit through distance learning programs. As part of the Canyons School District, many vocational studies are available through local Technology Centers, ranging from Heavy Diesel Mechanics to certification as a Microsoft Certified Systems Administrator.

Utah State Testing (UPASS)

Mandated through federal No Child Left Behind legislation, Utah adopted the Utah Performance Assessment for Students (UPASS) to prove academic proficiency. The annual Brighton High report card has shown above average performance in Language Arts as well as Science areas.
